Initial Evaluation:
The initial evaluation will last 30-90 minutes. Parents are required to attend the evaluation with the child. In order to determine your child’s communication skills, a variety of screenings and/or standardized assessments will be given. The evaluating speech-language pathologist will administer a receptive and expressive language test, an articulation (speech sound) test, an oral motor screening, and a hearing screening. She will also observe how your child plays, interacts, and communicates with you and any other family members that attend the evaluation. A brief feeding and swallowing test will be performed unless a more intensive feeding evaluation is indicated. Additional testing, including voice and fluency, may be performed as needed.
Following the initial evaluation, an individualized plan of care will be developed based on your child’s needs and your concerns. This will include goals that will be addressed during therapy. You will be given a copy of the evaluation report, plan of care, as well as a home exercise program to work on goals at home
Therapy Sessions:
Depending on your child’s needs, therapy may be recommended for 1-3 days per week for 30-45 minutes. All therapy sessions will be one-on-one with the speech-language pathologist. Therapy activities will be designed to address the goals set on the plan of care and will be individualized for your child. Parents are encouraged, but not required, to attend each therapy session. However, parents are not to leave the facility during treatment sessions.
